This tertiary children's hospital ED is one of only five designated paediatric Major Trauma Centre, receiving major trauma patients <16yr in South Yorkshire. The children's ED has dedicated areas for minors, majors, resuscitation and high-care and a co-located Paediatric Assessment Unit. The PED is staffed by teams of PEM consultants, resident doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses - with on-site GP support in the evenings. It provides a vital service to a wide geographical area in South Yorkshire. It is a real pleasure to work as a locum consultant in this fun, friendly department alongside fantastic teams of colleagues in a high-tech, well equipped dedicated children's hospital environment. I am currently doing a 3-month locum here (March to June 2025) - having previously done several locum periods in the PED: December 2022 to October 2023 (ad hoc agency locums) and two locum consultant contract posts in 2007-2008 and 2012.
Bradford Royal Infirmary serves a deprived inner city population in West Yorkshire. This high intensity children's ED is extremely busy seeing many severely ill patients, often with complex needs. There is great support and liaison with the adult ED and paediatric services. The incredibly hard working nurses, doctors, paramedics and ancillary staff - create an atmosphere of teamwork, resilience and bravery and it was an honour to work as an NHS Bank Locum member of this team.
Part of Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, Evelina London is the second largest children's hospital in London, providing specialised services to London and the South of England. The hospital has a fantastic set-up for acute and emergency paediatrics - with a paediatric emergency department (located on the St Thomas's emergency floor with in-house CT scanner), three intensive care units (Paediatric, Neonatal and Cardiac) and an on-site children's transport and retrieval service. The fast-paced paediatric A&E is staffed by a combination of emergency and paediatric emergency consultants, resident doctors, emergency nurse practitioners and children's nurses. There is a strong emphasis on teaching & training.
